Water Resources / Engineering Technician

Salary Range: $20.00–$26.57/hour
Opportunity for advancement to a supervisory role upon demonstration of competence and independent performance.

Position Summary

The Engineering Technician supports water supply management, Project administration, and field operations for the Dolores Project. This position is responsible for water accounting and allocation, hydrologic data analysis, reporting, customer coordination, and technical support for operations and maintenance activities. Work is primarily office-based with regular field responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Water Supply Management

  • Collect, analyze, and interpret hydrologic data (snowpack, runoff forecasts, reservoir storage, diversions) to calculate and administer Project water allocations in compliance with state law and governing contracts.
  • Maintain reservoir and river administration reports; prepare and distribute allocation and water-use reports using Microsoft Excel.
  • Assist in development of the annual reservoir operating plan and coordinate managed releases during filling years.
  • Administer the District’s Upstream Exchange/Augmentation Program, including applicant review, consumptive use calculations, agreement preparation, and annual tracking.

Administration & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate water-use records and prepare billing data.
  • Manage user accounts and coordinate allocation adjustments with Project stakeholders.
  • Develop summaries, graphics, and outreach materials related to water supply management.
  • Represent the District at meetings and support public outreach efforts.

Field & Technical Support

  • Collect field data including instrumentation readings, minor surveying, inspections, and gage monitoring.
  • Attend USBR inspections and ensure compliance with monitoring schedules.
  • Support operations and maintenance activities, including work order tracking, parts procurement, meter reading, and installation of delivery structures.
  • Maintain mapping and O&M management software; respond to 811 locates as needed.
  • Provide support to SCADA system operations.
  • Report emergency or abnormal conditions promptly.

Qualifications

  • Degree in engineering, water resources, or related technical/scientific field; or equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of water measurement and Colorado water administration principles.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including data analysis and unit conversions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to interpret contracts and technical plans.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to present information clearly and work collaboratively with stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and manage responsibilities with minimal supervision.
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Willingness to work shifts, overtime, and on-call assignments, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Working Conditions

This position includes extended computer-based work and outdoor field activities in varied and extreme weather conditions, including high elevations. Physical requirements include:

  • Regular lifting up to 50 lbs. and occasional lifting up to 100 lbs.
  • Ability to climb, balance, bend, stoop, crouch, shovel, and work in confined spaces.
  • Use of snow travel equipment (e.g., snowshoes or skis) when required.
  • Ability to wear a respirator.
