SCADA Operator (Water Operations)

Salary Range: $20.00–$26.57/hour
Opportunity for advancement to a senior role upon demonstration of competence and independent performance.

Position Summary

The SCADA Operator is responsible for monitoring and controlling the District’s raw water deliveries, consisting of approximately 80 miles of canals and 60 remotely-controlled gate structures using a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. This entry-level position operates the distribution system the irrigation season and assists with maintenance and related duties during the off-season. On-the-job training is provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate the SCADA system to monitor and control water delivery infrastructure
  • Perform basic maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of SCADA and communication system components
  • Monitor a 24-hour phone line and dispatch personnel in response to emergencies
  • Identify and report abnormal or emergency conditions
  • Assist with system maintenance and operational support as assigned

Schedule

  • Irrigation season: 12.5-hour rotating shifts (including nights), typically 4-on/4-off or 3-on/3-off
  • Off-season: Four 10-hour shifts (Monday–Thursday)
  • Overtime and on-call availability required, including nights, weekends, and holidays

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid Colorado driver’s license with a good driving record
  • Basic computer and math skills; familiarity with networking preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, prints, and technical specifications (or willingness to learn)
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a shift-based environment

Preferred: Knowledge of water delivery systems, including pumping plants, canals, gates, valves, and related infrastructure

Working Conditions

Most of the year will be spent in the control room or at the field station. This involves extended computer use. During the off-season, time will be mostly spent maintaining field infrastructure. This involves exposure to outdoor conditions. Requires moderate physical activity, including lifting up to 50 pounds, working in confined spaces, and performing tasks such as climbing, bending, and carrying. Must be able to work independently and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
